About

Whānau Mārama gathers together Māori artists and researchers under the nine whetū of Matariki to deepen collective understanding of the Māori new year.

MO RAATOU MAA is a sculptural womb, imbued with the tangi (sound) of three generations of wāhine reciting waiata (lamenting songs). The public are encouraged to enter the store and experience the work up close.

“How lucky am I to be able to provide a vessel of rest for all the senses, inspired by the OG carriers straight from the womb - our mama’s & theirs & theirs. This mahi sits next to the laneway named after my nana’s mum, Wheriko / strengthening the blood ties of wahine right to the centre of a commercial bay..”
